Trump backs both candidates in South Carolina GOP governor runoff
South Carolina GOP runoff: Trump backs Evette and Wilson in governor race See how the dual endorsement could shape Tuesday’s primary and November
President Donald Trump has endorsed both candidates in South Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial runoff, giving late support to Attorney General Alan Wilson after already backing Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette.
Trump said on Truth Social that he did not want to hurt either contender by choosing only one, and wrote that voters could not go wrong with either Evette or Wilson. The unusual move comes days before Tuesday’s runoff to decide the GOP nominee for governor.
The race has become a test of Trump’s influence in Republican primaries. Evette led the crowded primary field, while Wilson finished second and advanced to the runoff. Both candidates have also picked up other major endorsements, and the winner will be the favorite in November’s general election in a state that has not elected a Democrat as governor in nearly three decades.
