Canada held a ceremony on Friday to mark the upcoming opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge between Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, Michigan, without U.S. officials in attendance. Canadian ministers and border officials said the event was focused on the bridge’s role in trade, traffic flow, and border security.
The $6.4billion cablestayed bridge is scheduled to open to traffic on Monday, with pedestrian and cycling access set to begin on Aug. 5. It will add a second major crossing between Windsor and Detroit, a route that officials say should improve capacity and reduce pressure on the existing border infrastructure.
The ceremony also came against a backdrop of renewed CanadaU.S. trade tensions. U.S. President Donald Trump posted online during the event, saying his administration had changed the bridge agreement and secured half of the profits, while Canadian officials emphasized the longterm economic benefits for Canada and the importance of the new crossing for commerce.
