Finnish and Swedish jets intercept Russian aircraft over the Gulf of Finland

Finnish and Swedish fighter jets intercepted Russian aircraft over the Gulf of Finland. See how the NATO allies responded together as tensions rise on Europe's eastern flank.

Finnish and Swedish fighter jets were scrambled together for the first time on Sept. 24 to intercept Russian military aircraft flying over the Gulf of Finland, according to the Swedish Armed Forces. The mission involved Finnish F/A18 Hornets and Swedish JAS 39 Gripens responding to aircraft detected in international airspace. The Russian formation included a Tu134 transport aircraft, MiG31 interceptors, and Su30 fighter jets. Swedish Air Force commander Maj. Gen. Jonas Wikman said the operation showed how closely the two air forces now work together as NATO allies. The intercept came amid broader concern in Europe over Russian military activity along NATO’s eastern flank, including recent airspace incidents involving drones and military aircraft. Estonia and other Baltic states have also warned about rising regional tensions, while NATO says its eastern posture is defensive and intended to deter attacks.
