U.S. auto groups urge Trump to block Chinese automakers
U.S. auto trade groups push Trump to block Chinese automakers from the market See why leaders warn new entrants could pressure competition and reshape U.S. industry
Major U.S. auto trade groups are asking President Donald Trump to keep Chinese automakers out of the U.S. market, including by blocking them from selling, importing, or manufacturing vehicles in the country.
In a letter sent Thursday and seen by CNBC, the groups said Chinese entry could weaken fair competition and undo progress they say the administration has made in limiting Chinese influence in key industries. The appeal comes ahead of Trump’s planned meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington next week.
The letter was signed by leaders from six trade associations representing dealers, suppliers, and major automakers operating in the U.S., including Tesla and foreign brands. It comes after Trump said he would be open to Chinese automakers building plants in the United States.
