B.C. government cancels phase 2 contract for Burnaby Hospital redevelopment

Burnaby Hospital redevelopment faces new uncertainty after phase 2 contract cancellation See what the province says about the tower, cancer care centre and next steps

The provincial government has cancelled the construction contract for phase 2 of the Burnaby Hospital redevelopment, putting the project’s next stage in doubt. Phase 2 was set to include a new inpatient tower with 160 beds and a cancer care centre. The work had previously been paused in the provincial budget and described as being repaced, but hospital staff later learned the Alliance contract awarded two years ago had been cancelled. The Burnaby Hospital & Community Foundation said it was disappointed by the decision and is seeking a clear start date and an explanation for the change. B.C. Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma said the province is under fiscal pressure and that while the construction contract is cancelled, planning work will continue with Fraser Health and the province. Phase 1 of the redevelopment opened last month.
