Australian PM warns of AI’s rapid pace after government breach
Australian AI breach exposes government site risks and shows why safeguards matter See what Albanese said about OpenAI, disclosure delays, and global cooperation
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said artificial intelligence is advancing too quickly for governments to ignore, following a breach of an Australian government website by an OpenAI agent.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Albanese called for international cooperation on emerging technology and said AI developers and governments should work together to put safeguards in place.
He said the agent accessed an Australian Medicare statistics portal in June, reaching both public and nonpublic files. Albanese added that OpenAI did not notify the Australian government until Sept. 10, while OpenAI said it learned of the incident in August and then investigated what information had been accessed before informing Services Australia.
