Older Americans on Medicare will soon be able to get obesity drugs through a new Bridge demonstration program starting Wednesday, with a monthly copay of $50 for eligible patients. The change marks a major expansion of access to treatments from Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly, which have previously been too costly for many beneficiaries.
A recent survey found that most seniors are unaware the coverage is coming, even though CMS has been preparing providers and pharmacies ahead of the rollout. Officials say broader public outreach will increase after the benefit becomes available.
Enrollment is not automatic. Beneficiaries must be in Medicare Part D, meet the program’s eligibility rules, get a prescription, and receive prior authorization before coverage begins. Experts say the quieter launch may help the health system prepare for demand, though it could also delay some patients from using the benefit right away.
