Carney calls August byelections in three ridings
Byelections in BC, Ontario and Quebec could decide the Liberals' grip on power. See the key ridings, candidates and what’s at stake before voters head to the polls.
Prime Minister Mark Carney has called byelections for three federal ridings in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, with voting set for Aug. 31.
The races will be held in North Vancouver–Capilano, BeachesEast York and Chicoutimi–Le Fjord. The seats became open after former Liberal MP Jonathan Wilkinson left to become Canada’s ambassador to the European Union, former Liberal MP Nathaniel ErskineSmith resigned, and former Conservative MP Richard Martel joined the Senate.
The Liberals need to win at least one of the three contests to keep control of the House of Commons. With current vacancies and more expected later in the summer, the party’s seat count could fall below the level needed for a technical majority if it does not gain a seat in one of the byelections.
The Liberal candidates will be Braeden Caley in North Vancouver–Capilano, Tanveer Shahnawaz in BeachesEast York and Daniel Gobeil in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord. Other parties have also begun naming candidates, including Stephen Curran for the Conservatives in North Vancouver–Capilano and Caroline Dubé for the Bloc Québécois in Chicoutimi–Le Fjord.
