Democrats rally behind Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan Senate race
Michigan Senate race: Democrats rally behind Abdul El-Sayed to hold a key seat Party leaders back turnout and affordability push as Republicans target the seat
Michigan Senate nominee Abdul ElSayed met with top Senate Democrats in Washington on Wednesday as party leaders worked to unify behind his campaign and protect the seat from Republicans.
The closeddoor meetings at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee focused on strategy, party unity, and voter outreach in a race Democrats see as critical to their effort to keep the Senate. Several senators, including Chuck Schumer, Kirstin Gillibrand, Chris Murphy, Elizabeth Warren, Gary Peters, Mark Kelly, and Ed Markey, signaled support for ElSayed, though most stopped short of committing to public campaign appearances.
The gathering came after a bitter Democratic primary that highlighted tensions between the party’s establishment and its progressive wing. ElSayed also faced questions about outside allies from the campaign trail, but Democrats in the meeting largely emphasized affordability and turnout as the main issues heading into the general election.
