Green Party of Canada launches leadership race to replace Elizabeth May

The Green Party of Canada has officially opened a fivemonth race to choose its next leader, or possibly coleaders, as Elizabeth May prepares to step down in November. For the first time, the party will allow leadership teams to run together, reflecting a sharedleadership model. Candidates have until July 17 to enter the contest, and people must become party members by Oct. 14 to vote. The new leader will be chosen mainly through online ranked ballots, with results set for Nov. 14. The race comes after a difficult 2025 federal election, when the Greens saw their vote share fall below 2 per cent and worked to pay down campaign debt. Former MP Mike Morrice has said he is considering a run. May said she will remain in the role until November and said she is confident about the party’s future.
