The Toronto Blue Jays were knocked out of the postseason race after a 42 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in the first game of a doubleheader on Wednesday in Baltimore. The defeat left Toronto unable to reach the playoffs and dropped the team to 7781 on the season.
Toronto struggled again at the plate, going 1for14 with runners in scoring position and leaving eight runners on base. Max Scherzer allowed four runs over five innings, while Baltimore got a tworun home run from Pete Alonso and a solid outing from former Blue Jays pitcher Chris Bassitt.
Between games of the doubleheader, Toronto placed righthander Dylan Cease on the 15day injured list with shoulder inflammation, ending his 2026 season. Cease finished his first year with the club at 116 with a 2.40 ERA after signing a sevenyear contract in the offseason.
