About 80 rescued after flash flood at Grand Canyon leaves 2 dead

Grand Canyon flash flood recovery begins after 2 deaths and one missing See rescue details, trail closures, and storm risks affecting park visitors

Park officials say two bodies have been recovered and one person remains missing after a major flash flood swept through the Grand Canyon over the weekend. About 80 people were rescued as emergency crews used nightvision equipment and park records to locate visitors and hikers. The flooding damaged the only water pipeline serving parts of the park, forcing water restrictions and closing lodges, hotels and several popular trails and camp areas. Rafting trips on the Colorado River have also been suspended while officials assess the damage. Forecasters warned that more rain and thunderstorms could trigger additional flooding in the area. Witnesses described fastmoving mud, rocks and debris rushing through Bright Angel Creek and forcing hikers to seek higher ground before being evacuated by helicopter.
