OpenAI Calls for Stronger AI Safety Policy
OpenAI AI safety push urges faster rules, stronger safeguards, and practical oversight See what the company wants from lawmakers, states, and global standards
OpenAI says the rapid growth of AI capabilities calls for faster policy action and stronger safety rules. In a Sept. 9, 2026 post, the company argued that governments, industry, and labs need to move beyond voluntary commitments and focus on practical safeguards.
The post says OpenAI wants to work with U.S. lawmakers on mandatory national AI safety requirements, while also supporting statelevel bills in California covering independent safety assessments, AI auditor standards, youth protections, and safeguards against biological risks. The company also said it plans to help advance industryled standards and to support compatible international rules.
OpenAI said it has strengthened its own monitoring, alignment, and security measures, and that development should slow or stop when risks become unacceptable. The post also warned that future AI systems could accelerate research and increase risks at the same time, making shared standards and oversight more important as capabilities improve.
