An explosion at a fireworks factory in Liuyang, Hunan province, killed at least 21 people and injured 61 others, according to Chinese state media. The blast occurred on Monday afternoon at a plant operated by Liuyang Huasheng Fireworks Manufacturing and Display Co.
Emergency crews, including firefighters, rescuers, and medical workers, responded to the scene. Aerial footage showed smoke, damaged buildings, and debris, while authorities evacuated nearby areas because of hazards linked to black powder warehouses at the site.
Chinese President Xi Jinping ordered officials to make rescue efforts, search for missing people, investigate the cause, and strengthen safety oversight in key industries. Authorities also said they had taken control measures against those responsible for the company.
