Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Dylan Cease will start Tuesday’s MLB AllStar Game for the American League against Cristopher Sanchez of the Philadelphia Phillies, who will take the mound for the National League at his home ballpark in Philadelphia.
Cease is 64 with a 2.56 ERA this season and nearly threw a nohitter against San Francisco last week before a hit broke it up in the ninth inning. The Blue Jays said the nod makes him the first Toronto pitcher to start an AllStar Game since Roy Halladay in 2009.
Cease said he was surprised by the news and called the moment a special one. Sanchez, who is 114 with a 2.62 ERA, was praised by NL manager Dave Roberts for his strong first half and by the Phillies crowd that will see him pitch in front of a home audience.
