Toronto murder suspect appears in court from hospital bed

A 19yearold man accused of fatally shooting a Toronto police officer appeared in court by video on Friday from a hospital bed at St. Michael’s Hospital. Nicholas Bennett was brought before a justice of the peace to formally face firstdegree murder charges. Court heard that he slowly confirmed he could hear the proceedings and appeared to understand the process. Police say Bennett is accused of killing Const. Marc Pinizzotto during a raid last Thursday linked to a series of shootings, including gunfire directed at the U.S. consulate earlier this year. Bennett was wounded by police during the incident and has remained in hospital since then. Prosecutors said he regained consciousness Friday morning. Bennett is scheduled to return to court by video on Monday, and he may apply for bail at a later date in Superior Court. Police also said another suspect has been arrested in connection with the consulate shooting, while a funeral for Pinizzotto is planned for next week.
