TTC to test cameras for drivers passing open streetcar doors

The Toronto Transit Commission will begin a ninemonth pilot on Monday to monitor drivers who pass streetcars while their doors are open at curbside stops. Four streetcars on five mixedtraffic routes, including Queen, King, Carlton, Bathurst and Dundas, will be fitted with automatic camera technology that records incidents and licence plates. The TTC says the goal is to measure how often the problem happens and assess whether the system is reliable for possible future enforcement. No tickets will be issued during the pilot, but TTC officials say the data could support a future automated ticketing program. The commission said the project is focused on safety, noting that people boarding or leaving streetcars have been injured in these kinds of incidents in past years. Under Ontario law, road users must stop behind a streetcar with its doors open at a curbside stop.
