Vancouver police report most e-scooter riders were not wearing helmets

Vancouver e-scooter helmet rules took center stage in a police safety blitz See how enforcement is targeting unsafe riding and what rules matter most

Vancouver police say most escooter riders stopped during a September enforcement campaign were not wearing helmets. Since Sept. 4, officers issued 1,226 tickets and warnings to riders. Police said 920 of the people stopped were helmetless, leading to 167 tickets and 753 warnings. Additional enforcement covered riding on sidewalks and carrying passengers, which also resulted in tickets and warnings. Police said the campaign is meant to improve awareness of local escooter rules, including helmet use, age limits, riding locations and speed restrictions. The crackdown follows a fatal crash in July, when 30yearold Shyan Lolly died after a collision while riding without a helmet. Vancouver police say the safety blitz will continue through the weekend.
