Floating island spotted in B.C. reservoir keeps disappearing
Floating island at Williston Reservoir draws attention in B.C. See why experts say it’s unusual, unstable, and worth watching from afar
A strange floating mass of vegetation has drawn international attention at Williston Reservoir in northern British Columbia. The island, made up of dense roots, trees, and decaying logs, was first seen in July near Finlay Bay and later disappeared from view before reappearing elsewhere in the water.
B.C. Hydro said the feature was difficult to track because it was moving and likely unstable. The reservoir, the largest artificial lake in British Columbia, has been especially full this year after water levels rose to their highest point in 14 years, which may have helped lift the structure free from land.
Scientists and local residents say the island is unusual but not unprecedented. Experts have advised people to admire it from a distance, while B.C. Hydro said it does not consider the drifting island a threat to the nearby W.A.C. Bennett Dam.
