Days of persistent rain have caused flooding, road washouts, and sewer system strain in Edmonton and nearby communities, prompting local advisories and calls to cut nonessential water use.
The City of Edmonton, along with Beaumont, St. Albert, Stony Plain, Wabamun, Lac Ste. Anne County, and Beaver County, has warned residents to reduce indoor water use and check sump pumps, downspouts, and drainage systems. Officials say the region’s stormwater and wastewater infrastructure has been pushed to capacity, with more than 600 service calls reported by EPCOR in a single day.
Environment Canada says the weekend storm brought as much as 133 millimetres of rain in parts of the region, with more rain expected before the system weakens and moves away. Residents have reported flooded basements, backedup sewers, and road closures as crews continue response efforts.
