Ontario is providing $55.8 million to help launch York University’s new medical school, which is expected to focus on training family doctors.
Colleges and Universities Minister Nolan Quinn said the funding will support faculty hiring, a medical library, and the school’s undergraduate and graduate programs. The school is scheduled to begin welcoming students in fall 2028.
When it opens, the program will have 80 undergraduate seats and 102 postgraduate spots, with plans to expand later to 240 undergraduate places and 293 postgraduate seats. The province says the school will be the first in Canada primarily dedicated to family medicine training, as Ontario continues to face a shortage of primary care doctors.
