Quebec population projected to decline slightly until 2029

Quebec’s statistics institute says the province’s population is expected to edge down over the next few years before leveling off.
The latest projections show a drop of about 50,000 people between 2025 and 2029, driven mainly by fewer temporary immigrants. After that, the population is forecast to stabilize at roughly 9.17 million in the following decades, compared with 9.06 million in 2025.
The outlook also varies by region. Quebec City is projected to post the strongest growth through 2051, while areas such as CôteNord and Gaspésie—ÎlesdelaMadeleine are expected to shrink. Montreal is also forecast to see a decline, in part because of fewer immigrants and efforts to encourage newcomers to settle in other parts of the province.
