Anthropic and OpenAI release cheaper AI models

AI model prices drop as OpenAI and Anthropic launch cheaper, efficient options Compare GPT-6 Sol, Luna and Claude Opus 5.5 to cut costs without losing power

Anthropic and OpenAI have each introduced lowercost artificial intelligence models as competition intensifies among major AI labs and cheaper openweight alternatives. OpenAI said it added GPT6 Sol and GPT6 Luna to its GPT6 line, cutting API prices by about 50% versus its GPT5.6 promotional pricing. Sol is aimed at more demanding tasks such as coding, while Luna is designed for highvolume work like information extraction and document summarization. Anthropic announced Claude Opus 5.5, describing it as a more tokenefficient model that should cost about 40% less to run than Opus 5. The company said it is focused on improving efficiency so systems use fewer tokens depending on the task. The launches come after growing debate over AI safety and calls from Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a slowdown in frontier AI development. They also reflect customer demand for more costeffective models as companies look to control AI spending.
