Violent Pokémon card thefts rise in Laval, Quebec

Police in Laval, Quebec, say robberies involving Pokémon cards are becoming more violent. Investigators said Thursday that 10 suspects were arrested in connection with several armed thefts, including cases involving the sale of trading cards and MacBooks. According to police, the suspects used Facebook Marketplace to arrange meetings in public places. During the transactions, they allegedly used violence to take the items and leave without paying. Authorities said at least 30 Pokémon card thefts have been reported since Jan. 1, 2025, including 11 since March 1, and seven of those involved violence such as pepper spray. The arrested suspects, aged 16 to 18, face charges including armed robbery, assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and trafficking property obtained by crime. Laval police also advised people to verify seller and buyer accounts, watch for changes to meeting arrangements, keep records of transactions, and stay aware of their surroundings.
