Three people in Quebec’s Montérégie region received preventive treatment after possible exposure to rabies, according to the regional health authority.
The announcement came after officials confirmed a rabid stray cat in Godmanchester, Que., on July 23. Quebec’s agriculture ministry is urging pet owners to vaccinate animals and take precautions as rabies cases rise in southern Quebec.
Health officials said postexposure prophylaxis is used when a contact with a suspected rabid animal is considered risky. Residents are being told to wash the area for 15 minutes after a bite, scratch or saliva contact, then call 811 right away. Officials also warned people to avoid contact with wild or unfamiliar animals, even if they seem healthy or are dead.
