Quebec provincial police say Mexican authorities have arrested Maxime Paquette, who had been wanted since June 2024 in connection with the Desjardins data breach investigation.
According to the Sûreté du Québec, Paquette was arrested in Cancún and is now being held in Mexico while extradition proceedings begin. He is expected to face charges in Canada, including fraud over $5,000, identity theft, and trafficking in identifying information.
Police say the case is tied to the 2019 Desjardins breach, which affected nearly 9.7 million Canadians and exposed personal information such as names, addresses, birth dates, social insurance numbers, and email addresses. The SQ said it worked with Mexican authorities, Interpol, and other partners on the arrest.
