Typhoon Bavi made landfall in eastern China on Saturday, prompting widespread evacuations as the storm moved across the region after passing near Taiwan and affecting parts of southern Japan.
Chinese authorities evacuated nearly 2 million people ahead of landfall, including large numbers in Zhejiang province, where the coastal city of Wenzhou is expected to face heavy rain and strong winds. The storm weakened somewhat as it moved over cooler waters, but forecasters warned that its broad rain bands still posed a serious flood risk.
Taiwan reported no deaths from the typhoon, though officials evacuated more than 14,000 people and cancelled hundreds of flights as a precaution. In Japan, the storm passed through the southern Sakishima island chain, while heavy rains linked to Bavi's wider weather impact contributed to 17 deaths in the Philippines.
