US stocks rise as Amazon lifts the Nasdaq, S&P 500 and Dow on Friday See how higher yields and oil prices shaped the market's final July trade
U.S. stocks ended Friday higher, with the Nasdaq Composite, S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average all posting gains on the final trading day of July. Amazon's sharp advance helped lift sentiment, while investors also weighed higher Treasury yields and rising oil prices.
The S&P 500 rose 0.7%, the Nasdaq gained 1%, and the Dow added 276.97 points, or 0.53%. For the month, the Dow finished up 0.3%, marking its fourth consecutive monthly gain, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq fell on the month.
Markets were influenced by a jump in bond yields, with the 10year Treasury yield moving above 4.7% and the 30year yield reaching its highest level since 2007. Oil prices also moved higher, while company earnings from major technology and energy firms shaped trading throughout the session.
