Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Tuesday that the cyclospora outbreak in the U.S. is now under control, even as federal health agencies face criticism over how they handled the response.
Kennedy said investigators identified the source and that the companies involved have carried out a recall. The outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce, with some products served by Taco Bell, according to federal officials.
The CDC says more than 1,644 illnesses have been reported, including 94 hospitalizations and no deaths. Public health agencies and state officials continue to review the outbreak, while the FDA has also had to clarify earlier messaging that caused confusion during the investigation.
