Eby rules out Metro Vancouver vehicle levy amid affordability concerns
Metro Vancouver vehicle levy shelved as B.C. NDP cites affordability pressure TransLink now faces a funding gap—see what it means for transit and fares
B.C. NDP Leader David Eby said his party will not move ahead with a proposed vehicle levy in Metro Vancouver, a measure TransLink had considered as a way to support transit funding. He made the announcement in Kelowna as he argued that British Columbians are already dealing with high costs.
The levy had been discussed for months as fueltax revenue declines and as existing provincial topup funding is set to expire in 2028. But Eby said a nearly $14 billion provincial deficit and the pressures of an election campaign made the plan politically unrealistic.
The decision leaves TransLink without one potential longterm funding option and has disappointed transit advocates, who warn that service cuts could follow if new revenue is not found. At the same time, Eby has been focusing on other affordability measures, including a temporary fueltax cut and new groceryrelated pricing proposals.
