Crown seeks 16-year sentence in Longueuil courthouse stabbing case

Montreal courthouse stabbing case: prosecutors seek 16 years for Alexandre Garcés See why the Crown calls it premeditated as the judge weighs sentencing in January

Prosecutors are asking for a 16year prison sentence for Alexandre Garcés, who was convicted of attempted murder after stabbing court interpreter Hai Thach 15 times at a courthouse on Montreal’s South Shore in January 2024. The Crown said Garcés acted out of anger toward the justice system and planned the attack in advance. Prosecutors pointed to a farewell note, multiple knives, duct tape and a utility knife as evidence of premeditation. The defence argued for an eightyear sentence, saying Garcés’s mental health should be considered. A judge is expected to decide the sentence in midJanuary.
