Closing arguments heard in Ajax murder trial
Second-degree murder trial: closing arguments focus on intoxication and intent Crown and defence clash over Jennifer Polak's death before jury deliberations
Closing submissions have been delivered in the seconddegree murder trial of an Ajax man accused in the death of his girlfriend, Jennifer Polak, in Oshawa.
The defence argued that Kyle Severin was too intoxicated to form intent, saying cocaine and a sleeping pill left him confused and unable to remember events around Polak’s death in March 2024. Defence counsel pointed to police observations and Severin’s own testimony about his drug use and memory gaps.
The Crown countered that the killing was driven by anger after months of jealousy, control and abuse. Prosecutors told the jury that Severin was lucid enough to act intentionally, highlighting evidence about the injuries inflicted on Polak and testimony about the couple’s relationship. The judge is expected to instruct the jury before deliberations begin on Thursday.
