Mississauga approves one-year pause on new data centres

Mississauga data centre moratorium pauses new 10MW+ projects for one year Council aims to set rules as AI demand grows; see what this means for developers

Mississauga city council has unanimously approved a oneyear moratorium on new data centre projects. The city says the pause will give officials time to examine what rules and limits should apply to future proposals. The decision comes as demand for data centres grows alongside the expansion of artificial intelligence, which is increasing interest in larger facilities that use more power and resources. Local leaders in Mississauga and nearby Oakville have raised concerns about possible impacts on electricity use, water demand and noise. The freeze covers projects that would require more than 10 megawatts of power, a level roughly equal to the electricity used by about 10,000 homes. The vote could delay a 40megawatt proposal in northwest Mississauga backed by U.S.based Prologis, which said it was disappointed and is considering its next steps.
