Ontario Science Centre lays off science department amid restructuring
Ontario Science Centre layoffs spark outrage as staff cuts hit science, security, IT See how the restructuring affects programming, workers and the centre's future
The union representing workers at the Ontario Science Centre says it is outraged after layoffs hit the centre’s science department and several other units. OPSEU/SEFPO said the unionized workforce will fall from 166 to 136, with cuts also affecting live exhibit business development, security, education, marketing and IT.
According to the union, only one affected employee was offered another permanent role. An internal memo sent to staff said some reporting lines will change and several units will be redesigned as part of a broader restructuring.
The Ontario Science Centre said its mission has not changed and that new roles will be created. The province also said science programming, expertise and exhibits will remain part of the organization. Staff have continued to offer programming at temporary locations such as Sherway Gardens, Harbourfront Centre and the CNE, while work on a new permanent site at Ontario Place continues.
