Two Democrats help House advance anti-socialism resolution
House Democrats back Mike Johnson as a rule vote advances funding debate Procedural win keeps the House moving and lowers shutdown pressure
Two House Democrats helped Speaker Mike Johnson secure a narrow procedural win on Tuesday, allowing the chamber to move forward with debate on a resolution condemning socialism. The vote came after several House Republicans threatened to block the rule vote in protest of how GOP leaders handled a shortterm government funding bill.
The rule passed 209 to 208 after Reps. Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington sided with Republicans. Five GOP lawmakers voted against the rule, citing objections to the continuing resolution and changes the Senate made to the funding package.
The procedural vote does not decide the fate of the funding bill itself, but it allowed the House to continue floor action on the legislation. The spending measure would extend current federal funding levels and push the shutdown deadline to Dec. 11.
