Nugent-Hopkins sidelined for Oilers' opener

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins injury leaves Oilers without a key top-six centre See how Edmonton adjusts its lineup and opening-night plans without him

Ryan NugentHopkins will miss the Edmonton Oilers' season opener because of a lowerbody injury, the team said Tuesday before its game against the Vancouver Canucks in Edmonton. The veteran centre from Burnaby, B.C., is entering his 16th season with the Oilers after being selected first overall in the 2011 NHL draft. Last season, he had 20 goals and 36 assists in 72 games. His absence could affect Edmonton's lineup choices, with coach Mike Babcock saying NugentHopkins is expected to play on the second line. The Oilers also confirmed Tristan Jarry will start in goal, while Frederik Andersen remains out until December with a knee injury.
