A new Transportation Safety Board report says more than 400 GO Transit passengers narrowly avoided a serious collision in Burlington, Ontario, in March 2024.
The investigation found a GO commuter train left Aldershot station and passed a stop signal before entering a track already occupied by another GO train traveling in the opposite direction. Both crews managed to stop in time, missing each other by about 549 feet.
The TSB said the departing crew expected the opposing train to have cleared the area and did not notice the stop signal while dealing with other tasks in the cab. The board says the incident highlights the need for stronger rail safety protections, including physical failsafe systems that can automatically stop trains when signals are missed.
