Supreme Court temporarily blocks abortion pill restrictions
Mifepristone access stays protected as the Supreme Court halts new limits See what the pause means for telehealth, mail-order prescriptions, and the case ahead
The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday temporarily paused a federal appeals court ruling that would have tightened restrictions on access to the abortion pill mifepristone.
The order, signed by Justice Samuel Alito, keeps in place access through telehealth, mail, and pharmacies while the court considers the case further. The pause is set to remain in effect until at least May 11, giving Louisiana time to respond and the justices more time to review the dispute.
The case comes after a Fifth Circuit ruling last week sought to reimpose stricter limits on the drug, which is widely used in medication abortions along with misoprostol. Supporters of abortion access called the move an important temporary win, while antiabortion advocates criticized the decision. The legal fight over mifepristone is expected to continue.
