Officials say a wildfire that led to evacuation orders in West Kelowna, B.C., earlier this week was started by a prohibited campfire inside Kalamoir Regional Park.
The fire began around 11 a.m. PT on Tuesday and quickly prompted hundreds of residents to leave their homes. Fire crews brought the blaze under control later that day, allowing evacuation orders to be lifted and residents to return home.
West Kelowna fire chief Jason Brolund said campfires are not allowed in city parks and that the investigation is ongoing to identify who is responsible. The park remains closed, and officials say some lingering smoke may still be noticeable in the area.
