German company and B.C.’s Ksi Lisims sign long-term LNG deal

German energy company Uniper and B.C.based Ksi Lisims have signed a longterm liquefied natural gas supply agreement, according to a statement announced Wednesday in Düsseldorf, Germany. The deal calls for Uniper to buy two million tonnes per year of LNG on a freeonboard basis for up to 20 years, with first deliveries expected in 2032. The companies said it is the first major longterm LNG supply agreement between Canada and Germany. The announcement comes as the federal government continues to back LNG development in British Columbia, including the proposed Ksi Lisims export terminal and phase two of LNG Canada, both of which are still awaiting final investment decisions. Environmental groups, however, have raised concerns that expanding LNG exports could conflict with Canada’s climate goals.
