9/11 legacy: Rob O'Neill recalls the attacks that changed his Navy path He shares a powerful first-person account and why Americans should reflect and remember
Former Navy SEAL Rob O'Neill reflected on where he was when the Sept. 11 attacks began and how the events of that day altered his path. Speaking ahead of the 25th anniversary of 9/11, he said he was in Stuttgart, Germany, after returning from a deployment when news of the first plane strike appeared on television.
O'Neill said the second impact made clear that the attacks were deliberate, and he and other service members immediately understood that their work and future deployments would change. He later reenlisted in the Navy after 9/11 and went on to serve with SEAL Team Six.
In the interview, O'Neill also described calling his brother in Montana during the attacks and telling him, "Welcome to my world." He said the aftermath showed a rare moment of national unity and encouraged Americans to remember their families, communities, and first responders while reflecting on the legacy of the tragedy.
