Travel insurance may not cover WestJet strike disruptions
WestJet strike insurance may exclude coverage after a public labour warning Check your policy now to protect prepaid trips, connections and cancellations
Travel experts say passengers who buy insurance after WestJet’s potential strike was announced may not be covered if flights are cancelled or delayed because of the labour dispute.
According to insurers, a strike that has already been publicly flagged can be treated as a known event, which means new policies may exclude coverage tied to that disruption. Coverage can still apply to other issues such as illness or death, depending on the policy.
Experts say travellers with expensive connecting plans, such as cruises or other prepaid trips, should check whether they have cancellation or trip interruption protection, since airline refunds or rebooking may not fully offset broader travel losses. WestJet and the union continue to negotiate, so a strike is not yet certain.
