Gordie Howe bridge talks remain unresolved, U.S. ambassador says

Gordie Howe International Bridge talks continue as U.S. and Canada hash out terms See what ownership, tolls and opening delays could mean for Windsor-Detroit

The United States and Canada have not yet finalized the terms needed to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge, according to U.S. ambassador Pete Hoekstra. The bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, has been at the center of talks over ownership, toll revenue and cost overruns. Hoekstra said discussions with Canadian and U.S. officials have been positive, but the final agreement still needs approval from President Donald Trump. Canada has said it paid for construction and that ownership is shared with Michigan, while the original 2012 agreement calls for Canada to collect toll revenue until the bridge is paid off. Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens said the city expects the bridge to open this spring and argued that the existing deal remains fair. He also said delays create uncertainty for businesses, workers and local community groups that have benefited from bridgerelated funding and spending.
