Modi urges Putin to end Ukraine war as U.S. tariff threat targets Russian oil buyers
Modi urges Putin to end Ukraine war as India backs peace and hostilities cease. See how the talks and U.S. tariff threats could reshape energy and trade.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the war in Ukraine during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, on Monday. Modi said India supports peace efforts and wants a move toward a cessation of hostilities.
The meeting came as Russia continues attacks on Ukraine, including planned strikes on energy infrastructure, while Western officials warn of renewed pressure on Kyiv ahead of winter. The conflict has also kept global energy markets under strain.
The talks also took place against the backdrop of U.S. legislation that could impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries that are major buyers of Russian oil and gas. India, which has become Russia’s largest crude customer, has increased its imports sharply, and the issue remains a point of tension in its trade relationship with the United States.
