Durham police deputy chief retires after misconduct finding

Durham Regional Police Deputy Chief Chris Kirkpatrick is retiring after the police board said a watchdog investigation found he committed misconduct. In a statement posted Monday, the Durham Regional Police Service Board said it had agreed with Kirkpatrick that the employment relationship would end and that he would not return to work. The board said its decision followed a review of findings from the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency under the Community Safety and Policing Act. The board did not describe the specific conduct under investigation. In February, police said a deputy chief had been suspended after allegedly using a racially inappropriate term during a meeting of the force’s AfroCaribbean Canadian Internal Support Network, and later confirmed that the suspended deputy chief was Kirkpatrick.
