North York escalator death: Toronto mall incident under investigation by police See what happened at RioCan Empress Walk Plaza and the latest official updates
A man died Thursday evening after falling from an escalator at RioCan Empress Walk Plaza in North York, Toronto police said.
Police were called to the mall around 5 p.m. after reports of an industrial accident. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and the area was later taped off as shoppers were asked to leave.
RioCan said it is cooperating with the investigation. Toronto police later said the incident is not considered criminal, and the Ministry of Labour said it does not fall under its jurisdiction because it did not involve a worker or workplace activity.
