Mother bear killed after entering B.C. store
British Columbia black bear incident in Hope sparks concern over wildlife safety See why officers acted after a mother bear entered a Pharmasave store
Conservation officers in British Columbia say they killed a mother black bear that had entered a Pharmasave store in Hope on Sunday.
Officers responded around 2 p.m. after reports that a mother bear and her cub were inside the shop. By the time they arrived, the animals were outside and nearby in the neighbourhood. Both bears were tranquilized and examined.
Officials said the mother bear had a history of conflict in the area and was the same animal that went into the store. The cub was released into a wilderness area. Conservation officers said bears that become used to people and food, or that enter homes and stores, are not suitable for relocation or rehabilitation because of public safety risks.
