Former CIA Director John Brennan has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asking a federal court in Washington to order officials to preserve records related to criminal investigations into him.
In the filing, Brennan argues that the Justice Department is pursuing him at President Donald Trump’s direction and says the probes amount to retaliation rather than proper law enforcement. His lawyers also contend that officials have violated rules on prosecutorial conduct and records preservation.
Fox News reported that the FBI has been questioning current and former CIA officials as part of a broader Justice Department review of Brennan’s role in the intelligence community’s 2017 assessment of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Brennan has denied wrongdoing and has defended the assessment’s conclusion that Russia tried to help Trump’s campaign.
The motion asks the court to require the administration to preserve any materials and communications that could be relevant to Brennan’s challenge to any future charges.
