Waymo recalls 3,900 robotaxis after freeway construction zone incidents

Waymo is recalling nearly 3,900 robotaxis in the U.S. after some vehicles entered closed freeway construction zones, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The voluntary recall follows 13 known incidents in Phoenix and the San Francisco area involving Waymo’s fifthgeneration automated driving system. The company said the issue raises crash risk and that it has already limited freeway operations while it develops a software fix. Waymo said it continues to operate on surface streets in cities where it provides service. The recall is the second for the Alphabetowned robotaxi company in a little over a month, following a separate action in May tied to flooded roads and standing water.
