Consensys to split into MetaMask and institutional blockchain company
Consensys split MetaMask and blockchain infrastructure into two companies See how the 2026 separation could expand self-custody, payments and tokenization
Consensys, the Ethereum software company behind MetaMask, plans to separate its consumer product business from its institutional blockchain infrastructure operations into two independent companies by the end of 2026.
Under the plan, Joe Lubin will serve as chairman and CEO of MetaMask and executive chairman of the new Consensys. The new Consensys will focus on Ethereum infrastructure products such as Linea, Besu and Teku, and on helping financial institutions use blockchain for tokenization, stablecoins and other onchain services.
MetaMask will continue as a consumer selfcustody platform while expanding into payments, savings, investing and other financial products. The company said the split reflects the different priorities of its consumer and institutional businesses. MetaMask says it has more than 100 million downloads across about 190 countries.
